History of Black Onyx
The term onyx is said to have been generated from the Greek word “onux”, which means fingernail or claw. Though why it is related to a fingernail may seem baffling, legend has it that the mischievous Cupid once cut off Venus’s fingernails when she was sleeping. As the fingernails scattered on the ground, the Gods turned them into flesh-colored stones, as no part of a heavenly body was supposed to perish.

Origin of the Black Onyx is contradictory to its uses today. Magic lores believed that the Onyx was actually a terrifying demon who was imprisoned in the stone. It was believed that the demon troubled those who possessed the Onyx or kept it in close vicinity, through bad luck and nightmares. Onyx comes in a variety of colors like red, yellow or blue. It falls under the category of quartz stones, and has a hardness of between 6 and 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
